Airbus announces new H140 twin-engine light helicopter focused on aeromedical missions
Airbus Helicopters has unveiled its newest model, the H140, at the VERTICON trade show, a vertical aviation industry event held in Dallas, Texas.
The new multi-mission helicopter stands out in the light twin-engine category, offering high performance, operational efficiency and comfort for passengers and crew. With a capacity of three tons, the H140 is here to complement Airbus’ line of light aircraft focused on emergency medical services, passenger transport and business aviation. It is scheduled to enter service in 2028, initially in the aeromedical rescue segment.
During the presentation, Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even highlighted the company’s commitment to offering innovative solutions and meeting the growing needs of customers. “The development of the H140 is a reflection of our commitment to evolve in line with customer demands, taking advantage of the advances in our research and technology programs, such as Bluecopter,” he said. “We worked closely with H135 operators to incorporate their needs into the efficient design of the H140. It offers a larger cabin, optimized for maximum engine performance, ensuring better payload and range. We are proud to offer the most competitive option on the market.”
At the event, Airbus presented a full-scale model configured for emergency medical services. The H140 features several innovations, such as a new T-shaped tail with an optimized Fenestron, which reduces noise levels, as well as a five-blade main rotor without bearings and more powerful engines. The cabin has been enlarged and features larger windows, accommodating up to six passengers in comfort.
With accessibility in mind, the helicopter has double rear clamshell doors and a raised tail, allowing efficient loading of stretchers, including intensive care models and transport incubators. Sliding side doors also facilitate access to the cabin.

The new helicopter also inherits the five-blade rotor introduced on the H145 in 2019. This technology reduces maintenance requirements, improves reliability and increases passenger and crew comfort. In addition, Airbus has implemented an optimized maintenance plan, synchronizing the maintenance intervals of the airframe and engines, which reduces operating costs. The company is currently testing the first prototype at its Donauwörth facility in Germany, and will have a total of four aircraft dedicated to the development program.

Advanced technology for safety and efficiency...The H140 will feature the Helionix avionics system, already used on the H135, H145, H160 and H175 models. In addition to a four-axis autopilot, Helionix offers an intuitive cockpit designed to improve pilot situational awareness, reduce workload and increase safety during missions.
With this new addition to its fleet, Airbus Helicopters reinforces its commitment to innovation, efficiency and safety, offering a versatile aircraft prepared for the challenges of the sector.
