Seventh Boeing 777-9 takes flight

The seventh 777-9 has taken off for the first time. Test teams will prepare this aircraft to conduct Extended Operations (ETOPS) testing. The seventh aircraft's maiden flight lasted three hours, with the majority of the time spent over Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.

The seventh Boeing 777-9 successfully completed its first flight on July 29, 2026, taking off from Washington state for a three-hour test mission over the U.S. Pacific Northwest. This specific aircraft (registration N2008K / WH287) is the second production-standard model to fly and the first destined for Singapore Airlines.

The aircraft now officially joins the manufacturer's active regulatory certification fleet.

Unlike previous units focused on aerodynamics and avionics, Boeing's test team will prepare this aircraft specifically to conduct ETOPS (Extended Operations) validation missions. These evaluations are mandatory to demonstrate the reliability of the General Electric GE9X engines and support systems during long-haul flights over oceans or remote areas, ensuring safety should the jet need to fly for hours with only one active engine.

Accelerating toward 2027 deliveries...The introduction of this seventh aircraft comes at a strategic moment for the 777X program, which has faced years of delays:

-Resource reallocation: With Boeing having completed the test campaign for the 737 MAX variants (-7 and -10), engineering resources have been redirected to accelerate the final certification of the 777X.

-Flight hours accumulated: The combined fleet has already surpassed 4,800 flight hours across approximately 1,700 missions. Production status: While the initial prototypes were strictly for testing purposes, the most recent aircraft (including the sixth jet flown for Lufthansa and this seventh one) feature complete passenger cabins and actual airline configurations to validate the interior.

The manufacturer officially expects to complete the rigorous FAA review phase in late 2026, maintaining the current schedule for initial commercial deliveries in early 2027.
