Boeing and China Airlines (CAL) today announced that Taiwan’s state-owned carrier has become the newest customer for the 777X, with an order for 10 777-9 passenger aircraft and four 777-8 freighters.
The first Taiwanese carrier to order the 777X, China Airlines will take advantage of the widebody jet’s additional capacity and range on long-haul routes to North America and Europe.
In addition to the firm order, which was placed in March 2025 and is listed as unidentified on Boeing’s order and delivery website, the company has options for five 777-9s and four 777-8 freighters. With this order, China Airlines joins an exclusive group of global airlines that have ordered both the passenger and freighter variants of the 777X family.
“As a longtime operator of the 777-300ER and 777 Freighter, we are thrilled to welcome Boeing’s newest 777X family to our world-class fleet,” said Kao Shing-Hwang, president of China Airlines. “The advanced technology and capabilities of the 777-9 will provide our customers with a world-class flying experience, while the range and efficiency of the 777-8 Freighter will enable us to maintain our leadership position in air cargo transportation. This is a significant investment in our future, and we will rely on the new 777X family to help achieve our long-term sustainability goals.”
The world’s largest twin-engine jet, the 777-9 will offer 20 percent lower fuel burn and emissions than the aircraft it replaces, and the lowest operating cost per seat of any aircraft when connecting distant destinations, with a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km), Boeing describes. The 777-9 will enable China Airlines to maximize capacity with 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration, while also offering exceptional comfort with a more spacious cabin. Given the 777X’s interoperability with its existing twin-engine Boeing freighters, China Airlines plans to renew its fleet with the new 777-8 freighter, which offers 747-equivalent payload capacity, as well as a 30 percent improvement in fuel and emissions efficiency and up to a 60 percent reduction in noise footprint.
“By welcoming China Airlines to the 777X family of customers, we are pleased to extend our nearly 60-year partnership that began with the 707 and 727,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “We value China Airlines’ continued trust and confidence and look forward to delivering the new 777Xs adorned with the beautiful plum blossom livery in the years to come.” “Operating the 777-9 and 777-8 Freighter will enable China Airlines to increase capacity and position the airline for future growth,” said Dan Schull, Boeing vice president of Commercial Sales for Northeast Asia. “In addition to these new 777X jets, China Airlines has 787 Dreamliners.”
Customers around the world have ordered more than 520 777X aircraft.
