Spain's Iberia buys 110,000 tonnes of sustainable fuel from a US biofuel supplier

Iberia signed an agreement with the North American supplier of biofuels and chemicals for the purchase of 22 thousand tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) per year, totaling 110,700 tons at the end of five years.

The acquisition, according to the company, is enough to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 353 thousand tons. Its aircraft engines are expected to be powered by 45% SAF on routes from Madrid (MAD) to two US west coast destinations by 2028.

“SAF is the best solution to advance the decarbonization of the aviation sector, while other technologies are developed. (...) This is a global challenge that must be faced on a global scale and that requires the maximum possible public-private collaboration”, according to Iberia's Director of Sustainability, Teresa Parejo.

On the first flights to Dallas (DFW), San Francisco (SFO) and Washington (IAD), in the United States, in June 2022, the airline, through a partnership with a large energy company, carried out its first long-haul flights with biofuel produced in Spain from biological waste.

With these three flights, using an Airbus A330-200, Iberia reduced CO2 emissions by 125 tonnes, using 2% SAF as fuel.
