First Boeing 787 to be dismantled
With only ten years of use, the first 787 Dreamliner will be dismantled. Even though Boeing has scrapped one of the prototypes, this is the first time that series units will be scrapped.
The Irish asset management and trading company EirTrade Aviation announced that it will dismantle and ship the parts that will be extracted from the process, which will take place in Glasgow (PIK), Scotland. The expectation is that the components will be made available by the end of March.
The two Boeing 787s, registrations VP-CVL (MSN 35304 / LN102) and VP-CVM (35305/112) were produced in 2013, have flown through Norwegian Air and have been stocked at the Scottish airport since 2019. Other airlines are expected to can benefit from what will be extracted in the disassembly, reducing maintenance costs.
"As no Boeing 787s have been retired from commercial service to date, there is almost no USM (usable material) market for this platform. We are entering a specialist area and expect to become the market leader in providing USM for the platform, which will reduce the cost of maintenance events for aircraft owners," said Ken Fitzgibbon, CEO of EirTrade Aviation.
In July, the first commercial flights with this Boeing aircraft to Brazil will complete ten years.
