Air India makes mega-order for 470 Boeing and Airbus jets

Expected for weeks, Air India's mega-order for 470 Boeing and Airbus jets would already be agreed, according to Reuters sources.

Considered since the end of last year, the agreements should reach the figure of US$ 100 billion and boost the order backlog of the two manufacturers.

The Airbus order would have been signed this Friday, February 10, and includes 210 single-aisle jets from the A320neo family and 40 A350 widebodies.

The deal with Boeing, in turn, was closed on January 27, when the Tata group completed a year at the helm of the Indian carrier, formerly belonging to the government of the Asian country.

Boeing is expected to supply 190 737 MAX, 20 787 Dreamliner and 10 777X – the variants were not informed.

Air India's orders for planes are unparalleled even in the US, where massive deals have been signed in the past.

The airline, once India's most important, has lost ground to low-cost carriers such as IndiGo and SpiceJet in the domestic market and to Gulf carriers on long-haul flights.
