FAA authorizes eFlyer2 electric aircraft certification process

US aircraft manufacturer Bye Aerospace has received FAA approval for a so-called G-2 “Means of Compliance for Certification” document for the all-electric eFlyer 2 aircraft.

This document describes sixteen specific certification plans that cover all systems, subsystems and procedures. All sixteen certification plans have been accepted by the FAA.

Bye Aerospace submitted the eFlyer 2 type certification application to the FAA in April 2018, which then developed the sixteen specific plans in conjunction with the manufacturer.

This acceptance allows the manufacturer to enter the test and compliance demonstration phase of the certification, including the manufacture of the eFlyer 2 serial number #001 and several production compliant aircraft.

The eFlyer 2 will have an air-cooled Saftan ENGINEUS engine with a maximum power of 110 kW (150 hp) and a maximum flight time of three hours.

The KLM Flight Academy (KLM-FA) intends to start classes with electric aircraft in the future. With that in mind, advances have been made to Bye Aerospace in 2021 on fourteen aircraft: six two-person eFlyer 2 variants and eight four-person eFlyer 4 variants that will join the training fleet around 2025.

To date, Bye Aerospace has secured 135 orders and options for the electric-powered eFlyer 800. In addition, 732 orders have been placed and 162 purchase rights have been secured for the single-engine eFlyer 2 and four-seat eFlyer 4.
